CBD and olive oil are among the most powerful natural antioxidants. Everyone knows the antioxidant properties of phenolic compounds and tocopherols present in extra virgin olive oil.
Oxidative stress is due to an imbalance between oxidizing agents and antioxidant agents and leads to various harmful consequences for the whole organism and even the skin. From a chemical point of view, the term antioxidant means a substance capable of counteracting, slowing down or neutralizing the formation of oxygen radicals that are formed as a result of oxidation reactions.
Oxidation reactions, ie all those chemical reactions that involve the use of oxygen molecules, occur continuously in the body. Food eaten, for example, is converted into energy through oxidation processes, and cellular respiration itself is based on oxidation reactions.
During oxidation reactions, highly reactive intermediate products are formed, known as oxygen free radicals, capable of causing damage to various molecules and cellular structures, first of all DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid), but also proteins and lipids that make up cell membranes.
In the human body, however, there are substances called antioxidants that have the power to prevent the formation of radicals or to neutralize those already formed, thus limiting damage to cells and tissues.
From a chemical point of view, antioxidants are molecules that oxidize very easily. Being thus easily “oxidizable”, free radicals will preferentially react with antioxidants, thus saving various molecules and cellular structures.
In this sense, antioxidants can be considered “traps” for free radicals. Since many functions, such as breathing and digestion, produce free radicals, the body is equipped with a series of antioxidant substances capable of preventing and / or repairing the damage induced by radicals on biological structures.
The body naturally produces a series of endogenous antioxidants. These include glutathione, coenzyme Q and the superoxide dismutase and catalase enzymes.
The structure of CBD contains a free oxygen atom. This is the atom that is donated to free radicals by neutralizing them. It is in this free oxygen atom that the antioxidant properties of CBD consist and it is always this free oxygen atom that makes CBD ideal for getting rid of free radicals. When the production of free radicals is excessive, or the reserve of antioxidants is insufficient, a condition of oxidative stress can be established.
Free radicals, highly reactive molecules that, if present in excessive quantities, can cause serious damage at the cellular level as well as cause rapid aging and therefore the onset of wrinkles and expression lines evident on the face.
CBD affects the redox balance (reduction-oxidation), both directly and indirectly, by modifying the level and activity of oxidizing and antioxidant substances by modulating the degree of oxidative stress. It interrupts radical reactions, captures free radicals or transforms them into less active forms, thanks to its chemical structure (hydroxyl groups of the phenolic ring) which allows to delocalize the unpaired electrons of the resonance structures of the radical forms. In particular, the compound prevents the formation of superoxide radicals.
Olive oil is a monounsaturated fat composed almost entirely of triglycerides; the most represented fatty acids are oleic, linoleic and palmitic. Food with multiple virtues, it contributes to body growth, the process of myelination of the brain and the formation of bones, the oil is also an adjuvant in resistance to infections, it is a powerful antioxidant capable of preventing the signs of aging and with great nourishing and emollient properties for the skin.
In addition to oleic acid, olive oil contains about 15% linoleic acid, 15% palmitic acid, 2% stearic acid.
It also contains an unsaponifiable fraction ranging from 1 to 2% which provides this oil with a significant concentration of antioxidant active ingredients including: phenolic compounds, chlorophyll, Vitamin E, beta-carotene (provitamin A), phytosterols with restorative and anti-inflammatory action and squalene, a major component of the skin’s surface.
